The decision of U-23 coach Austin Eguavoen not to release league players to their club for matches as he prepares the team for the forthcoming match against Equatorial Guinea has continued to generates comments.
Former national team coach Joe Erico said that such a decision is risky on the part of the players, as he advised him to release only players who are on duty. “ For God sake, that is dangerous, these players are being paid to play for their clubs and depriving them from discharging their duty is not a good thing.
If you ask me, I think it is too bad, but I do not want to condemn it. My advice to him is to draw a programme and pick out the players that are going to play for their clubs before they travel for the tournament, that is how we used to do it in our days. He should not keep unnecessary possession of club players,” Erico said.
Meanwhile, Eguavoen said he took the decision against the weekly release of players to their clubs because it has slowed down his plans to build a strong team against Equatorial Guinea.
He however, said the players will rejoin their clubs after this month’ s All Africa Game qualifier.
