In the first round first leg match watched by many dignitaries, including Gov. Patrick Yakowa, on Sunday, a goal in each half of the match gave the Nigerian Federation Cup champions the advantage.
The young Kaduna United side, making their continental debut, dominated the game but failed to underline their dominance with more goals due to poor marksmanship.
Persistent offensive moves, however, saw them taking the lead in the second minute of the first half when Ali Adamu scored with a half-volley.
A sustained offensive had seen the visitors’ goalkeeper, Mabaya Brice, pushing back Victor Edema’s low shot from the penalty edge, but Adamu latched on to it from the left side to put the ball past the goalkeeper.
The hosts continued to pile pressure in the second half, and they extended their lead in the 54th minute when substitute Saviour Fidelis was brought down at the left edge of the penalty box.
Central defender Linus Adams squeezed his high free kick past the defensive wall through the near side into the net for the game’s second goal.
Commenting on the outcome of the match, Kaduna United’s Technical Adviser Maurice Cooreman said his players did not live up to his expectation.
“I expected more than this. At least, I wanted us to score more, but the boys relaxed too much to give our opponents the chance to defend,” he said.
On his part, Coach Boukar Emmanuel of Foullah Edifice said his boys tried their best although they failed to take advantage of the few scoring chances they had.
“My players tried their best, but the result could have been different if they had scored from those counter-attacks we made,” he said.
The second leg match will take place in Ndjamena in a fortnight. (NAN)
