April polls: Army solicits partnership with media

Kaduna – The Nigerian Army on Thursday in Kaduna solicited the partnership of the media for the successful conduct of the April general elections.

Lt.-Col. Abubakar Edun, the new Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 1 Mechanised Division, made the plea during a familiarisation visit to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) office in the state capital.

Edun said the partnership was vital to the success of the upcoming elections because of the roles the two institutions had to play.

He said such roles should be complementary for the success of the electoral process.

“While it is the duty of the army to support the police in maintaining internal security, it is that of the media to highlight activities relating to the elections to ensure their credibility,” he said.

The army spokesman, therefore, stressed the need for a synergy between both institutions for the smooth conduct of the elections.

He said the army was prepared to support the country’s democracy by discharging its statutory responsibilities within the ambit of the law.

“The Nigerian Army is apolitical one; our own is to take orders from the authorities and effect them accordingly.

“However, I am assuring you that whenever the army is called upon at anytime, it is ready to respond, be it internal security or to curtail any external aggression,” Edun said.

He described the media as being mightier than the gun, saying “give me a pen and I will paint the devil as an angel.”

The army deputy director, who replaces Col. Abayomi Dabiri who is on a military course in Lagos, commended NAN for the good coverage it had given to military formations in Kaduna and its environs.

Responding, the NAN Zonal Manager for the North-West, Malam Ibrahim Mammaga, said the Agency had always given adequate coverage to military activities within the zone.

He assured the army of the Agency’s commitment in ensuring that next month’s elections were properly covered and promised to partner with the army in achieving the goal.

The Army PRO, who is on a familiarisation tour of media organisations within the zone, was until his new appointment the Deputy Chief of Staff, Directorate of Public Relations, Army Headquarters, Abuja. (NAN)
