WORRIED by the continued increase in joblessness in the country, The Ogun State Governor, Otunba Olugbenga Daniel has advised students of tertiary institutions to learn a trade that would make them self employed.
Daniel who faulted the nation’s educational curriculum noted that it was making the youths to look for white-collar jobs, adding that there was an on-going reform in the educational sector of the state to make students become employers of labour
The Governor made the declaration at the launching ceremony of a book; Entrepreneurship- Poly Bag making, by the Former Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Eng. Micheal Jooda, in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.
Daniel, who was represented at the occasion by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Yemi Akinwonmi, expressed dissatisfaction over the present generation saying, they are too social to be committed to matters about their lives.
He said, “The Older generation are straight forward, thorough and disciplined and they make use of their brain but this generation is not, the youths are too social and they spend most of their time in beer parlors.
“The present curriculum in schools does not help matters, it is making our youths to be job seekers, graduates are expected to impact their societies but they are becoming white collar job seekers.”
Corroborating the governor, Jooda explained that the nature of entrepreneurship that is being offered as a compulsory course in higher institutions need to be upgraded.
According to the Author of the book, schools are concentrating more on the theoretical aspect of the course.
“Students are supposed to be graded on their practical experience,when we say entrepreneurship. It should mean hand- craft and students should be asked to produce something they will sell.
The occasion was attended by well meaning Nigerians including, the Rector Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Arc. Tokunbo Fowode, his Deputy, Mr. Lekan Famuyiwa, Commissioner for Special Duties in the state, Chief kola Sorinola amongst others.
