GOVERNOR Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State weekend led over 5,000 indigenes of the State on a rally to sensitize them on the need for registration at the on-going Voters’ Registration which kicked off nationwide Saturday.
The Governor armed with leaflets, posters and fliers personally distributed these materials to motorists, market women, traders and passers-by.
Dr Mimiko advised the people that massive voters registration and strict insistence on one-man, one-vote are potent weapons to fight electoral fraud which he regretted, had been the major problem militating against credible elections in the country.
The rally, which meandered through the major streets of Akure the State capital, witnessed an unprecedented number of people who joined in the rally.
The awareness leaflets bears messages like “Your vote must count in 2011” “Your vote is your power, register now,” “Work towards free and fair election, go out and register now” to market women, taxi drivers, commuters, artisans among others during the Voters Registration Sensitization Campaign.
Addressing the crowd at the Ilesha Road Motor Park, the Governor urged the people to disallow fraudulent politicians and charlatans from hijacking power by participating in the voters registration as their voters cards will empower them to freely choose leaders of their choice.
“This voters registration’s advantages are not limited to possessing voting right, it is also a passport to getting more into the State coffers from the Federation Account since population remains one of the indices being used for revenue allocation to states and Ondo State people would be better for it if there is an improvement in our monthly earnings.”
