Voter registration: Ekweremadu calls for patience

By TONY EDIKE
ENUGU—DEPUTY President of the Senate, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, has implored Nigerians to be patient with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, over the challenges confronting ongoing voters’ registration across the country.

Ekweremadu made the call while monitoring the exercise in Enugu West  senatorial zone where he also thanked PDP delegates across the five local government areas in the zone for their overwhelming support for him during the recent party primaries.

The senator, who also registered alongside his wife, Lady Nwanneka Ekweremadu, at Amachalla Mpu registration centre,, appealed to the people to ignore all the challenges being experienced at the various registration centres and endeavour to get the voter’s card.

He reminded the people that their vote was their power, stressing that registering was not just a civic right but also a fundamental way to build a better and stronger Nigeria by voting in the right candidates.

He said: “In April, there will be an election. If you do not register, you will not vote. So make sure that you not only register but you also mobilize others to register. Your vote is your power, the power to contribute in building a strong Nigeria.”

The deputy senate president also debunked the notion that Enugu West was the smallest senatorial district in Enugu State, adding that the people of the district should capitalize on the ongoing voters’ registration to prove that the senatorial district was, indeed, the largest.

Ekweremadu assured the people that no matter what happened, all those desirous of registering should go and register either electronically or manually.

The senator, who used the monitoring and mobilization exercise to also thank the delegates in the different local government areas of the senatorial district, namely Aninri, Awgu, Oji-River, Udi and Ezeagu for their massive support for him, Governor Sullivan Chime and President Jonathan during the PDP primaries, assured them of a transformed Nigeria with more dividends of democracy.
