Senate President, David Mark has declared that Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, remains the party of choice for majority of Nigerians, adding that he would still have remained in the party if he had lost his re-election bid.
Mark made this assertion while fielding questions from newsmen after casting his votes at the Aper Aku Stadium Makurdi, venue of Benue State gubernatorial primaries.
The Senate President, who spoke against the backdrop of the reported decamping of some leading members of PDP in the state to the opposition parties, maintained that the party was strong and would wax stronger despite the decision of the aggrieved members.
He assured that the party would not die because some aggrieved persons were leaving, adding that the membership of any political party by a politician should not be predicated on the winning of party primaries.
Mark said: “I did not join the party for the purpose of winning elections alone but because I feel that it is a party that is worth belonging to. I am a member of PDP and nothing can change that.”
He insisted that one could not reform a party from outside adding, “you have to be a member of the party before you can think of reforming it.”
Vanguard recalls that some leading members of the ruling PDP in Benue State including the immediate past Governor, Senator George Akume, House of representatives members, Oker Jev and Mzenda Iho withdrew from the primaries of the PDP on grounds of alleged malpractices that trailed the last PDP congresses in the state.
These politicians have since pitched tent with the ACN and are poised to slog it out with the PDP members at the forthcoming general elections.
