Lagos has been robbed of the privilege ofosting an international marathon as the Athletics Federation of Nigeria during the week terminated the contract signed with title sponsors Globacom.
The event was started in 2002 with MTN sponsoring it for six years. But in 2007 the AFN chose Globacom as the title sponsor with the hope that the event would surpass what was achieved in previous years, however after only two editions, Globacom succumbed for reasons not yet disclosed by the company.
The last that was heard of the firm was through a statement on December 12 2009:
“We regret to inform you that the event has been postponed owing to circumstances beyond our control. In consultation with all stakeholders, especially the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, it was agreed that the event be postponed till next year.”
This was after athletes around the world registered to participate in the event, which was the highest paying marathon in Africa.
In 2010 the event did not hold as promised and there was silence from both sides.
“We have decided to terminate the contract the AFN signed with Globacom. For two years they have not responded to our correspondences regarding the Lagos Marathon,”said AFN technical and performance director, Sunday Bada.
