I’d resign rather than compromise, says Benue REC

Benue State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Alhaji Nasir Ayilara, has declared his intention to resign his position rather than compromise the stance of the commission to ensure that the forthcoming general elections are free, fair and credible.

Meanwhile, Benue State Independent National Electoral Commission has taken delivery of 2,340 Direct Data Capture, DDC, machines.

Ayilara made this declaration in Makurdi at a consultative meeting with stakeholders on the forthcoming general elections.

He noted that the commission was ready to bequeath to the nation generally acceptable polls, while advising that Nigerians cooperate with the commission in the task of organising a hitch free election in the country.

The REC said: “We are determined to ensure that the forthcoming polls meet acceptable standards. That is why I can assure Benue people that I will rather resign my position as REC than compromise on my integrity.”

He informed that the commission was partnering all relevant security agencies in the country to ensure that the election are held without major incidents in any part of the country.

On the registration exercise, he warned registration officers of the position of the law, stressing that the law stipulates one year jail term for any officer who engages in double registration  and  this also applies  to others involved in the act.
