AHEAD of April polls, Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State weekend advocated stiff sanctions on any broadcasting organization that uses its medium as a means of political tool against any political party.
The call according to him was because “politicians were found of using private and state owned media as instrument of propaganda during elections across the country.
Dr Mimiko asked the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) not to spare any erring broadcast media who engages in such unpatriotic venture as the April polls is few months ahead.
He spoke in Akure at the inauguration of the community radio floated by the Federal University of Technology (FUTA) code named “FUTA Radio 93.1 fm”.
The governor said the commission should adhere strictly to the code and guidelines for the operations of broadcast organizations in Nigeria.
Dr Mimiko urged the Commission “ to ensure strict monitoring of the activities of the broadcasting stations with a view to make sure that they adhere to the rules and regulation.
Earlier,the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adebisi Balogun, said the station was a result of a strong partnership with the host community.
Balogun said that the radio station would serve as a means of disseminating the products of research and training of the university, adding that it would also enable the institution receive feedback from the society.
The Director General of NBC, Yomi Bolarinwa in his address warned that the station should not be used for another purpose other than the one for which it was established.
