THE list of those decamping from Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to other political parties in Ebonyi State is gradually becoming alarming, especially with the latest decampment that took place on Tuesday in Abakaliki.
A frontline politician and younger brother to the former Governor of Ebonyi State, Mr. Joseph Egwu, has made it clear that he was no longer a member of PDP, even as he had directed all those in his campaign train to be unwavering in their support for him.
Egwu, an aspirant contesting Ohaukwu Ebonyi Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives in this year’s general election noted that his decision to leave the party was predicated upon the party’s modus operandi of not giving room for internal democracy and lack of regards for the wishes of the masses.
He said: “What I’m observing in the party is not what I had expected, having been in PDP for a long time now.
“The party doesn’t respect the wishes and aspirations of the electorate but rather its selfish interest and unpopular ways of doing things.
“I’m still in the race and will soon announce the name of my new party. The party of my choice understands the principles of internal democracy and the wishes of the electorate at every given time.
“I am moving with all my supporters. I believe I will win at the polls no matter the party I find myself. The most important thing is to be popular and have the electorate on your side.”
According to Egwu, the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will do a good job in this year’s general election.
He expressed hopes that with the guiding principle of INEC, which advocates one man, one vote, there would be a free, fair and credible election.
In a related development, a founding member of PDP, contesting Onicha/Ohaozara/Ivo federal constituency seat in the House of Representative, Mr. Chaka Ogbonnya Nweze, has also dumped PDP to pitch tenth with the All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP.
The resolution for the adoption of the candidacy of the new ANPP member was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the National Executive Committee meeting of Old Ohaozara Progressive Youth Front, OOFYF, which has members spread all over Nigeria and in the Diaspora.
