CDHR to IGP: Nullify police withdrawal from banks

By Emma Amaize
THE Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, in Delta State has said the recent directive by the Inspector General of Police, IGP, withdrawing mobile policemen from banks, corporate organisations and individuals was counter-productive and urged the police boss to rescind the order.

In a statement by the state chairman and secretary, Mr. Benefit Orugbo and Chief Fred Omereyone, respectively, the group called on the Inspector General of Police to work out adequate measures to strengthen security operations of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, as the April 2011 general elections approach, and forget  withdrawing mobile policemen from banks and corporate organisations.

His words, “we wish to point out that the directive of the IGP to withdraw mobile police from banks, corporate organisations and individuals is begging the question of combating crime by the police as such withdrawal is not a guarantee that the Police  can effectively provide adequate security of lives and property in the country. We, therefore, urge the Inspector General of police to, as a matter of urgency, rescind the decision and not to further jeopardise the already volatile security situation in the country.”

On voters registration, the CDHR said, “we have observed over time with dismay the registration of fictitious names of voters in preceding elections conducted in the country, cajoling of citizens by politicians to embark on registration of voters and in the end, they were disenfranchised from choosing their leaders.
