Zoning hampers political growth, says rights group

By Vincent Ujumadu
HUMAN Rights group, the International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law, INTERSOCIETY, has described the zoning of Nigeria’s presidency between North and South by some politicians as a great impediment towards smooth operation of political rights in the country.

In a lecture he delivered in Onitsha, Anambra State, Chairman of Board of Trustees of INTERSOCIETY, Mr. Emeka Umeagbalasi, regretted that political rights were grossly disrespected in Nigeria, adding that many political decisions taken in the country did not conform to international standards.

“This colonially created formula is very destructive. It has made few partners in the Nigeria project to perpetually believe that Nigeria’s presidency is their birthright

“The best formula that will ensure equity and credible localisation of Nigeria’s presidential zoning ought to have been predicated on the six zonal arrangements of the South-east, South-south, South-west, North-east, North-west and North-central and not the grossly lopsided North and South formula.
