Nigeria coach Samson Siasia has surprisingly left out the leading scorer in the Nigeria Premier League, Ukeyima Akombo, from his call_ups for an invitational tournament in the United States of America in February.
This is Siasia’s first squad since he was appointed Super Eagles coach and besides the shock omission of Akombo, who has scored four goals for league leaders Sunshine Stars, several other impressive players in the NPL have been left out of the United States President’s Day Celebration Soccer Invitational Tournament, the Green Soccer Bowl.
Akombo, described by his coach as “wonderful”, has not only scored goals, but his pace and class have stood out so far this term.
Other notable omissions are Akombo’s teammate at Sunshine Stars Ajani Ibrahim as well as Gabriel Rueben from Kano Pillars, who is easily the best defensive midfielder in the NPL.
Siasia has called up mostly players from the domestic league for the tournament, which kicks off on February 12 in Dallas, Texas.
Nigeria, one of the eight teams for this competition in honour of US President Barack Obama, are drawn against Iraq, Poland and Malaysia in Group A, while Egypt, Bosnia_Herzegovina, Kenya and Bahrain will play in Group B.
The training camp will begin on January 10 in Abuja.
