Rights activist killed in Abia

By Anayo Okoli
TRAGEDY struck the sleepy Ameke Abam Community in Arochukwu local government area of Abia State Wednesday as one of its prominent sons and a foremost civil rights activist, Comrade Chidi Nwosu, was killed in cold blood in his house.

According to the wife, Mrs. Amaka Chidi Nwosu, the incident happened at about midnight of last Tuesday.

He was said to have been killed by a group of five persons, who also made away with some cash but left his property untouched.

When contacted the Public Relations Officer of Abia State Police Command, Mr. Geff Ogbonna, said he was yet to get the report.

However, Nwosu’s wife confirmed to Vanguard that the matter had been reported at Ozu Abam police station.

It was not possible to ascertain at press time if the killing was an act of armed robbery or assassination as the police were yet to say anything on the matter.

Nwosu, 39, the founder and president of Human Rights Peace and Justice Foundation, HRPJF, a foremost civil rights group in Aba, Abia State, had been a vocal critic of the past governor of the state, Chief Orji Kalu, and present government of Theodore Orji until recently when his group made a u-turn and started drumming support for the government.

This was after the incumbent governor broke ties with his mentor and immediate predecessor, Orji Uzor Kalu.

The deceased fought fervently in the courts against the sale of Abia Rubber plantation by the government, a case which he won.

The company was subsequently recovered by Governor Theodore Orji who made him the general manager.
