Metu gets G4S support for Jamaican training camp

By Patrick Omorodion

Leading world’s security firm, G4S has made a bold move to sharpen the rough edges of Nigerian sprinter, Obinna Metu, who they have been sponsoring since 2007,  preparatory to the 2011 athletics season.

Accordingly, the company is sponsoring Metu, an undergraduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, on a six weeks training tour of Jamaica where he will train under the watchful eyes of Usain Bolt’s coach, Glen Mills.

Corporate Affairs Director of the Nigerian arm of G4S, Columbus Okaro in a letter to the president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, Chief Solomon Ogba said that Metu was among the athletes selected from around the world for an additional funding for this year.

“G4S has provided Obinna Metu this once in a life time opportunity to sponsor him to Jamaica for training with coach Glen Mills, Usain Bolts coach,” Okaro said, adding that the athlete will also “participate in one of the most sought after Track and Field training camps in Jamaica, Racers Track Club, home to Usain Bolt.”

Before jetting out on Thursday, December 9, 2010, Metu told Saturday Vanguard Sports that he was happy for the opportunity given him by G4S to train in Jamaica, home of accomplished athlete, Usain Bolt.

“It’s a blessed opportunity God has used my sponsor, G4S to accord me. I’m not going for a kindergarten training, I’m going to train with the best athletes and coaches in the world. It will help me come out in flying colours next year”, Metu said.
