Delta re-run: INEC commissioner meets guber candidates

By Austin Ogwuda
DESPITE media war, some governorship candidates for the coming re-run election in Delta State met face to face at the headquarters of the state’s Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Asaba Monday, exchanging banters.

Notable among them were the former governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, Chief Great Ogboru and Ovie Omo Agege.

It was at the instance of the meeting called by the State INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Gabriel Adah, who read out the riot act to them, warning that any attempt to cause commotion during the re-run would be met with adequate punishment as provided by the Electoral Law.

He specifically cautioned that none of them (governorship candidates) or any political office holders would be allowed to come to the polling stations with police orderlies, while saying that violence and thuggery should be eschewed at all cost to ensure free poll.

He charged them to equally admonish their supporters accordingly.

The INEC boss, who had earlier during a recent stakeholders meeting vowed that INEC would do all in its power to ensure transparency in the conduct of the re-run election, as “Delta is a test for the new INEC, it will ensure that your vote counts as we are committed to one man, one vote”, told the governorship candidates that voters’ register would be displayed at polling stations for easy accessibility.”

He also said political party agents would be co-opted to monitor the distribution of electoral materials right from INEC headquarters, down to the local government level, as a way of enthroning transparency.

Present at the meeting with the INEC Commissioner yesterday were former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of PDP, who was smiling all through, Chief Great Ogboru of DPP,  Chief Ovie-Omo Agege of  RPN, Chief Abel Adijala of Labour Party; and Chief Emmanuel  Igbini of PRP.

The INEC boss had earlier disclosed that 12 political parties had indicated the willingness to field candidates for the re-run.
