5 killed in Edo auto crash

FIVE persons were said to have killed on Monday in a ghastly automobile accident, which occurred at Ekpoma the administrative headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The accident is coming on the heels of similar ones at Asaba and Umunede, both in Delta State in which about 50 persons lost their lives.

According to an eyewitness account, a KIA saloon car with registration number GL 362 AAA and a motor-cycle that was said to be moving in opposite direction were said to have been involved in a collision.

The driver of the car was said to have lost control due to over speeding and somersaulted severally before killing the motor-cycle rider in the process.

Vanguard learnt that other passengers in the vehicle died instantly while the driver was said to have been rushed to the Irrua Specialist Hospital.

The Red Cross Chairman of Esan West Division, Mr. Mike Odiah, who was at the scene of the accident attributed the cause to over-speeding.

He said the bodies of the accident victims were deposited in a mortuary, adding that the Red Cross has been providing Highway Ambulance Services for emergency cases during the yuletide season.

Officials of Federal Road Safety Corps could not be reached for comments.
