2011: Ebonyi PDP bars Elechi’s kin from contesting

By Peter Okutu
ABAKALIKI — The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ebonyi State, weekend, unanimously passed a ruling barring aspirants contesting the senatorial seat from where Governor Martins Elechi hails from as well as Ikwo/Ezza South federal constituency.

According to the party, the reason for the decision is to provide an enabling political atmosphere for the governor  and give a sense of belonging to other local government areas within the senatorial zone in next year’s general elections.

The resolution was taken during an expanded State Executive Committee, SEC, meeting of the party, which was attended by party stakeholders including Governor Elechi, his Deputy, Prof. Chigozie Ogbu, and National Assembly members from the state.

By the resolution, Senator Emmanuel Onwe, who was recently admitted into the Senate after winning a three and half-year-old legal battle against Senator Julius Ucha to represent the zone in the Senate as well as Chief Onwukaike Nwambam, who is gunning for the Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency seat, have been debarred as both of them are from Ikwo local government area of the state.

The party Chairman, Umahi and state governor, Chief Elechi, in their separate views, added that the constitution of the party provided for zoning principle as confirmed by the recent court judgment, but that it could only be enforced by the party, and not the court.

Governor Elechi further described the opposition Party in the state, the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, as a secret cult, accusing members of the party of fomenting violence in the state since 2007 elections.

He counseled contestants to remain in the party even when they lose nomination as they will still be recognised one way or another, rather than pull out to other parties.

He said: “It is better to contest on the platform of PDP and when you lose you are still a member. There is no way two or ten persons can occupy a position meant for one person at the same time. So, why join the secret cult, ANPP, when you will still be defeated anyway?” He said

The PDP Chairman, Engr. Dave Umahi, dismissed suggestions that the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, has given automatic ticket to National Assembly members of the party.
