SON seals off warehouses over fake cables

By Princewill Ekwujuru
LAGOS—Officials of Standards Organisations of Nigeria, SON, have  sealed-off two warehouses located at Oshodi main market for marketing wires and cables worth N400 million suspected to be fake.

Speaking to Vanguard in a telephone conversation, Frank Nyando, who led a team of enforcement officers of SON to Oshodi, said two warehouses were locked up by his men,  “because we suspected that the owners are dealers on fake and dangerous cables, which are very hazardous to the society.”

He added that no arrest had been made.

He said: “We were very careful not to spark off avoidable skirmishes or break down of law and order in the volatile area like Oshodi, which is the reason we cleverly resisted the temptation of arresting anybody. Also we did not want to put our lives on the line.”

Investigation further revealed that the current development is sequel to a tip-off by a concerned  member of Cable Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, CAMA, NigerChin Electrical Development Company Limited to SON, that its product, including wire and cables had been faked.

It was also gathered that the faked cables are valued at over N400million and are the type used by oil companies in their various operations. Investigation also revealed that, SON is planning a raid at Alaba, Idimuta and Santos markets all in Lagos.

Information also revealed that part of the recovered faked cables at Oshodi market, bears the trade mark of both Kabelmetal Nigeria Plc and that of NigerChin.

The SON official added that, the two Warehouses involve in the shoddy business, are located on numbers (withheld) in Oshodi main market respectively. The SON enforcement officers stated further that, some of the recovered cable has been forwarded to SON laboratory for content analysis.

He however added that on the spot unorthodox and physical examination by his officials at the market has revealed that, the cables are faked. “We had magnetic field with us which we used in testing the cable and they all prove that they are made of iron properties, as all the cable conduct magnetic field.”

He explained that, cables are not made of iron properties because it has no resistance to heat. According to him, cables are expected to carry copper properties, because it has the capacity to resist heat and can conduct electricity without endangering the life of the users.
