Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) has, in collaboration with Ashaka Cement Plc, organised a workshop to sensitize block builders on producing quality sandcrete blocks that will prevent building collapse.
Speaking at the event held recently in Bauchi, the Director General of SON, Dr. John Nadanusa Akanya, said the aim of the workshop was to train owners of block industries in the state new techniques of producing good quality blocks that will ensure that buildings stand for a long time without collapsing.
Akanya said technological convergence has created new products, new services and new stakeholders, all of which require standard for competitive edge. He added that the work shop will help the builders to provide quality blocks that will support infrastructure development programmes of goverrnment, using new techniques and quality raw materials.
Also speaking at the occasion, Bauchi State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Alhaji Yerima Aliyu Giade, said the workshop will enable block builders to package quality products. He said that the state government has set aside N500 million loan facility for Joint Trade Association in the state, at free interest rate, to boost commercial entrepreneurship.
“Government is aware of the role of sand block and concrete makers as major employers of labour, wealth creation and service providers for quality block facilities and would be recommended for patronage in all government construction projects,” he stated.
The theme of the sensitization workshop was, “Producing quality blocks and concrete products using quality raw materials and standard method of production”.
