THE Primate of Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh, has urged Nigerians to ensure that they registered to enable them vote during next year’s general elections so as to instal government of their choice.
Speaking in Awka Monday, during the presentation of the new Archbishop of the Niger Province, Most Reverend Christian Efobi, and enthronement of the new Bishop of Awka diocese, Rt. Rev Alex Ibezim, at the Cathedral of St Faith, Awka, the primate reminded Nigerians that enough money had been set aside by the Federal Government to ensure a successful registration and conduct of the 2011 elections.
He added that it was, therefore, necessary that Nigerians of voting age played their own part.
“The money that was released to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is so much and that is why it is important that every eligible voter should register to be able to vote during the forthcoming elections,” he said.
“People should not give reasons for not participating in the exercise because there is time for everything. There is time to wear the cassock and there is time for one to perform civic obligations.
“People must, therefore, make out time to register because it is only when people register and vote during election that a government of the people, for the people will be enthroned.
“I, therefore, urge you not to shy away from participating in this exercise because it is important for the future of democracy in the country,” he said.
Preaching a sermon at the church service, the Dean of the Church of Nigeria, Most Reverend Ephraim Ademowo, said it was unbelievable that poverty was still ravaging the country at a time politicians living in affluence.
According to him, Nigerian politicians should learn not to waste the nation’s resources on irrelevant things and urged Nigerians to come together to build a vibrant nation that her citizens would be proud of.
In his speech, Governor Peter Obi acknowledged the fact politicians have failed Nigerians, adding that it is only the Church that could salvage the situation.
He admitted that things were not getting better in the country and hoped that Nigerians would elect somebody who is committed to making a positive change.
“Nigerians, especially those in this part of the country should vote in somebody that can help improve their wellbeing, otherwise our people will continue to suffer,” the governor said.
