A number of schools in Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area, LCDA, have prevented health workers from administering anti-polio vaccines on their pupils.

Some of the schools refused to let the health workers into their premises because they were not neatly dressed.

A proprietor of a school, who pleaded to anonymity, said that the health workers that came to his school were not presentable enough to offer immunisation to the children.

He said: “The two health workers, a man and a woman, that came to my school were not neatly dressed enough to attend to my children so I did not allow them in.”

Another proprietor, Mr. Patrick Amaechi, said that the Parents, Teachers’ Association, PTA, of the school resolved to disallow health workers from attending to their children because of the uncertainty about the quality of their tools and drugs.

He said: “One parent reported that his son fell ill some hours after he was administered anti-polio immunisation and that had scared other parents.”

He also complained that apart from the appearance  of the health workers, their equipment looked dirty which, he noted, posed health risks to the children.

The Chairman of the LCDA, Alhaji Monsuru Ola, declined to speak to speak despite several efforts to reach him, while health officials at the council could not offer any explanation.
