NOC mourns late Captain Gowon

The Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, has expressed shock at the news of the death of former President of the Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria, Captain Isaiah Gowon.

Secretary General of NOC, Mr Tunde Popoola in a condolence message said that the late Captain Gowon was a disciplinarian  whose love and commitment for the combat sport shot it into reckoning. “He was one of the very few whose love for the sport was immeasurable and his discipline and humility was amazing. “He was humble and a straight-forward gentleman.

Not so many people knew he was even related to former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. He was such a nice, simple, gentleman. The Olympic family will definitely miss his services”, Popoola tearfully mourned at the NOC headquarters in Lagos.

He recalled late Gowon’s joy when Chika Chukwumerije won silver at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. “He was overjoyed that the sport  produced the first black man to win a medal moreso that the winner was a Nigerian”
