IBADAN—THE unhealthy political rivalry that has engulfed Oyo State almost desecrated the Yidi Praying ground, Agodi Gate yesterday, as some rough-looking men believed to be loyalists of the Deputy-Governor of Oyo State, Taofeek Arapaja assaulted a notable Ibadan man, Mr. Lateef Oyelade.
Though, no harm was recorded, the action of the supporters of the deputy governor caused some delay as the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Shiek Suara Haruna insisted that everything must be calm before he would enter the praying ground.
This came as perceived Muslims opponents of Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala stayed away from the praying ground as a result of alleged security reports which had earlier warned them that they might be attacked by hoodlums.
Those who avoided the popular praying ground are Senator Lekan Balogun, the predecessor of the incumbent governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin and Alhaji Yekini Adeojo, a former Deputy National Chairman (South West) of the PDP.
Vanguard gathered that as early as 7am, the people who reportedly dressed in a funny way had occupied all the seats meant for Alfa and some chiefs and when they were told to leave, they ignored the appeal.
In order to maintain decorum and civility at the praying ground, Mr. Oyelade who is one of the Islamic leaders, was said to have whispered to the deputy governor who arrived the praying ground around 9am, to prevail on his men to leave the place, but he was allegedly rough-handled in the process.
Islamic leaders and others reportedly came to his rescue with condemnation by other Muslims who felt insulted by the acts of the people.
The ill-treatment meted to Oyelade made him leave that side and went to join other people where a former Governor of the state, Alhaji Lamidi Adesina was praying.
A source told Vanguard that immediately after the prayer, there were sporadic gunshots but it was not ascertained who shut the guns and whether anyone was injured or not.
When Vanguard called one of the aides of the deputy governor, Mr. Kola Adegoke on phone, his phone rang but he did not answer the call. At a second attempt, he had switched off. Mr. Oyelade who was assaulted, said he was not a politician and would not want to comment on the issue.
