Elechi tasks School principals on quality education delivery

By Peter Okutu

ABAKALIKI—Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State has enjoined principals in the South East geopolitical zone to work towards the provision of quality education to guarantee the future of every child in the area.

This was the high point of the 4-day workshop organized by All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, ANCOPSS, with the theme, “The Role of Principals in Quality and Effective Education Delivery in Nigeria.”

In his address, Governor Elechi, who was represented by the Commissioner for Education, Chief Hyacinth Ikpor, lamented that the gradual collapse of quality education in the zone was indeed upsetting and stressed the need for teachers to be trained and retrained.

According to him, this  will enable them keep abreast with the ins and outs behind the new school curriculum.

He charged them to take appropriate care of children under their tutelage and avoid in them the culture of negative practices.

“Education has fallen to the ground. It is dynamic. As I commend teachers for their noble role, I’m urging them to take care of our children who are the future of this country. Teachers should not raise our children on the negative perspective of life.

“They should try to eradicate malpractice in all public schools.   When it is done, we create an equal playing ground for all children in the country.

“I’m not happy to hear that some children still go to school without basic writing materials. This is bad,” he emphasized

Earlier, the National President of ANCOPPS, Mr. Adeniyi Falade, who was represented by the first National Vice President, Mrs. Ngozi Njoku, stated that the professional training workshop was one of the ways ANCOPSS uses to achieve her cardinal objectives of improving her members for better service delivery of education.

He added that some of the achievements recorded so far in the area of education wouldn’t have been possible without the role of principals in various secondary Schools across the South East.

Falade pleaded with the state government to participate in the sponsorship of ANCOPSS’ executives in Ebonyi State to the next International Convention of Principals Conference holding in August next year in Ontario, Canada.

According to him, such outings were necessary to upgrade the performance of principals in this modern age.
