Edo PDP chair warns against using Anenih’s name in campaigns

BENIN CITY — AHEAD the 2011 general elections, the Edo State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, has warned aspirants seeking political positions on the platform of the party, including the House of Representatives leader, Col. Tunde Akogun, Senators Yisa Braimoh and Odion Ugbesia  to stop giving the impression that they had been endorsed by the former chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih.

Orbih, who addressed about 97 aspirants of the party in Benin City, Monday, said the days of endorsement of candidates were over, insisting that no candidate of the party would emerge without a free and fair primaries.

He was reacting to allegations that some aspirants, who were intimidating others with the claim that they had been endorsed by the leadership of the party in the state and Chief Anenih. Vanguard learnt that some aspirants had threatened to quit the party, if majority of both the state and national legislators in the party, were endorsed with out a primaries, as was being rumoured.

However, Orbih who described such rumours being peddled by party members as misleading, assured that the party would conduct primaries at all levels.

He added that the party will not hesitate to sanction any member using the name of the leadership of the party and Chief Anenih in campaigns.

According to him, “there have been reported cases of those putting the name of our national leader (Chief Anenih) in their fliers, giving the impression that he is the one who has been favouvred, others are saying that my pictures are appearing in posters in different parts of the state.

I want to say it here and now that if there is any aspirant who is using the name of our national leader or using my photograph as part of his campaign strategy, we will deal ruthlessly with such an aspirant”.

“ Let me warn that no leader can save you on this matter, it is the delegates that can help you. But don’t go and give money to one leader and you will think the leaders will say once we have held money, we have given you the ticket.

Not even me, don’t give money, don’t give anything go to your various constituencies and campaign and once you are able to get the delegates, one thing I can assure you, I am not going to change any result that will come to my office because whatever comes from the field I will take so anybody who is interested in these positions and you believe in yourselves and you believe that you are the right person to do the job for your people, please go back home and campaign” he stated.Orbih  added:“this is a riot act, anybody, once it is reported that you go to anywhere to campaign against anybody who is also a fellow aspirant, once we able to investigate and we discover that it is true, you are automatically disqualified because we will not make any progress if we start abusing ourselves”.
