BENIN—The health status of frontline elder statesman, Chief Anthony Enahoro, threw Edo State into confusion, yesterday, following reports that he had passed on. But Vanguard, can confirm that the Elder statesman was still in coma at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH.
The 87 year-old First Republic politician, is credited to have moved the motion for Nigeria’s independence from the British colonialists in 1957.
A dogged fighter and political tactician, Chief Enahoro, who was the arrow head of the defunct National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, that fought the military regime of late General Sanni Abacha from exile, was reported to have been rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, following deterioration in his health condition.
Enahoro had distinguished himself in the feild of journalism, as he became an Editor at the age of 21 in one of the titles of Dr. Azikiwe chains of newspapers.
However, a source close to the family in a telephone call, informed Vanguard, yesterday, afternoon that although Chief Enahoro was slightly in disposed, there was no problem.
“Nothing is happening. No problem at all. Oga is okay”, the source said and disclosed that the octogenarian politician was in Benin. But another source from Edo State Government House, who spoke to the newsmen on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Chief Enahoro was taken to UBTH for medical attention.
The source added that though details of his health condition were sketchy, Chief Enahoro situation has attracted the concerns of Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who has planned a visit to the Enahoros late, yesterday, evening to ascertain the true position of his health from family members. At press time, the Governor was yet to visit the Enahoro family house [Cameo House] located at Aideyan Crescent, in Benin City.
