Anthony Ogogo, who once posed naked for a gay men’s magazine, beat Indian poster boy Vijender Singh in a bad_tempered Commonwealth Games bout in New Delhi.
The England fighter, sometime model and reality television contestant, is now assured of a silver medal.
Ogogo, who has appeared on a version of Big Brother, came from behind to win the middleweight bout 4_3 after world No 1 Singh took an early lead.
Singh became a pin_up in India after returning from Beijing with an Olympic bronze. He has been dubbed “the Indian David Beckham” because of the media’s fascination with his private life.
The 21_year_old Ogogo said: “I found his Achilles heel. I’ve beaten him. I can’t believe it. I’m very happy.”
Ogogo said Singh, who refused to speak to reporters after the fight, could have no complaints about the scoring, “because he was doing illegal things” like holding and keeping his opponent’s head down.
He said he was not gloating by blowing a kiss to the partisan home crowd at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium at the final bell.
“I thrive on pressure. Boxing is one of the most pressure sports. I thrive in that environment. No disrepect to the Indian crowd. They’ve shown nothing but hospitality to us,” said Ogogo.
“I wasn’t taking the mickey. I blew a kiss because I wanted to thank them.” The win was “massive”, he added. “Now I just want to win a gold medal.”
