Maritime workers blame illegal arms on mid-stream operations

By Victor Ahiuma-Young & Franklin Alli

LAGOS—WORKERS in the nation’s maritime sector, weekend, in Lagos, said last week’s  interception of 13 containers of arms and ammunition at Apapa Ports reinforced the union’s calls on President Jonathan to order a special committee of security, labour and other stakeholders to monitor mid-stream operations of importers, saying most of illegal arms in the country came through mid-stream operations.

Under the aegis of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, the workers warned that the level of illegal arm imports and prevailing state of insecurity in the country ahead of the 2011 general elections,  posed a serious threat to free and fair polls.
