Hoodlums scatter ACN membership registration

IBADAN—THE membership registration exercise of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN in Oyo State which started on Saturday was partially disrupted by some hoodlums believed to be the loyalists of one of the governorship aspirants of the party.

Though, no one was reported dead in the skirmish, some members of the party were injured when suspected hoodlums attempted to hijack registration materials from the officials of the exercise. Four suspects believed to be involved in the melee were arrested by the police.

According to an impeccable source, trouble started when the hoodlums reportedly armed with dangerous weapons stormed the Oyo North and Oyo Central Senatorial districts of the party and tried to cart away all the materials being distributed ahead of the registration exercise which kicked off on Saturday.

The chaotic situation led to the suspension of the registration exercise in Afijio and other Oke Ogun areas of the state. Senator Abiola Ajimobi said he and members of his group boycotted the exercise because some people tried to hijack the refistration materials.

Alhaji Lam Adesina said the exercise was a success adding that those who boycotted would still be given ample opportunity but was firm in saying that no one would be given automatic ticket except he is chosen by the electorates.

Also, when the exercise started on Saturday, some cutlass-weilding hoodlums numbering 25 reportedly swooped on those registering at ward 9, in Ibadan South West Local Government, but they prevented them from carrying registration materials away.

Already, the exercise has created some ill-feelings within the aspirants who all agreed it would soon be resolved.

But, the exercise recorded a huge success in other places without any violence. In many wards in Ibadan South East, Ibadan North West, Ibadan North many members of the party were trooping out in large numbers to register.

All the aspirants of the party visited concluded that the inconsequential skirmish was nott enough to overshadow the success of the exercise. The aspirants-Chief Femi Lanlehin, Barrister Kazeem Adedeji, Professor Wale Oyemakinde, Mr. Soji Akanbi and others said such minor skirmish could not be ruled out in a place where nine aspirants are vying for the same seat but remained hopeful that they remained undivided and that they would not allow anything to distract them from getting the power from the ruling PDP/

The Leader of the party in the state, Alhaji Adesina said with the democratic principles that the party had embarked upon, the election had already been won in the state.
