Good roads coefficients for economic growth – Jonathan

By: Chidi Nkwopara, OWERRI.
President Goodluck Jonathan says the provision of good access roads are necessary coefficients for the economic growth of every nation.

Dr. Jonathan made the remark while commissioning the dualized Owerri-Orlu Road executed by Imo State government, during his two-day official tour of the state.

He commended Governor Ikedi Ohakim for painstakingly embarking on the project, which he said “will facilitate human interaction and boost economic activities in the state”.

Other projects commissioned by the President included the Amazano – Umuaka road, the new Governor’s Office Complex, the gigantic Egbeada and Orji Water Schemes, among others.

The President had earlier in the day, held a closed door meeting with some elders, where critical issues bordering on the state were discussed.

Vanguard recalls that Chief Ohakim, who was accompanied by his colleagues from Bayelsa, Abia and Anambra States, later proceeded to the palace of the traditional ruler of Obinugwu and Chairman, South East Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, where he was conferred with the chieftaincy title of Chinemeze 1 of Igboland.

Speaking later to Vanguard, Governor Ohakim gave reason for embarking on the erection of the new Governor’s Office Complex, maintaining that the previous was not only dangerous for human habitation but also a disgrace to the state and its people.

“This state was created February 3, 1976. Between 1976 and today, there hasn’t been any Governor’s Office. The office being used before was the temporary office of one Major James that worked with the expatriate District Officer, Mr. Douglas. Every other person used it”, Ohakim said.

Continuing, the Governor explained: “When I arrived, the crack in the office was about 10 centimeters. That notwithstanding, the first terror was the story of fire that burnt the Governor’s Office. Since then, I have remained the only Governor who has been operating from his residence”.

He also promised that he would continue to execute people oriented projects to ameliorate the plight of the masses.
