Nigeria’s long jumper, Stanley Gbagbake sees the Commonwealth Games as his litmus test for his quest for international recognition.
Gbagbake the only Nigerian doing 8m in the event, has a crowd of rivals to contend with in the event. However, he says he is not looking at names, rather he is focused on making an impact on the sands in New Delhi.
“I have worked hard for the Games. It is going to be quite challenging facing the field, but I do believe the gold is up for grabs,” said the athlete who won bronze at the last African Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.
He was relegated to the third position by Godfrey Khotso Mokoena of South Africa and Ghana’s Ignisious Gaisah. They are in New Delhi to have a repeat of the contest in Nairobi 2010.
Apart from Mokoena and Gaisai, there are Australians Fabrice Lapierre, Chris Nofke, England’s Chris Tomlinson, Alain Bailey of Jamaica and Bermuda’s Tyrone Smith.
These athletes will slug it out for the medals in the Games. Lapierre’s 8.40m is the fifth best jump in the world this season, he leads the Commonwealth Games pack. And Gbagbeke must have to come with a decent 8.30m be in the medal zone.
