PORT HAR-COURT— ONE person was confirmed dead and several houses torched, Tuesday night, when fight broke out between K Dere and B Dere communities, all in Gokhana Local Government Area of Rivers State. Confirming the development to Vanguard, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Rita Inoma- Abbey, linked the clash to several factors.
According to her, “the two communities have been having running battle over a portion of land, which the Supreme Court had passed judgement on long ago.” She didnt say if the disputed land had any remote link to the recent clash, but said that preliminary investigation traced the clash to argument by some youths from the two communities over the English premier league.
The Police spokesperson, said security had been beefed up in the area and about five persons arrested in connection with the clash.
“Fighting between K Dere and B Dere broke out last evening of 19/10/2010 as a result of youth arguments over premier league result. Existing mobile police presence was reinforced but one person was confirmed dead and a few houses burnt.
“Five persons have been arrested. To bring the crisis under control, ten police vehicles of SOS and PMF were deployed with men early this (yesterday) morning as further reinforcement. Crisis between the two warring communities had continued to take place once in a while over a piece of land even with a Supreme Court judgement,” she said.
Meantime, a community source, who lamented the impact of the clash on the communities blamed the cause on cult related differences.
According to the source, “those involved in the argument were members of two dreaded cult groups in the area, Debam and Dewell.” In the heat of the argument, according to the source, “the situation got out of hand and fighting broke out.”
