Bloody registration: Edo ACN chieftain arrested

A chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in Edo State, a woman (name withheld), was arrested yesterday by the police attached to the office of the Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Zone 5 Benin, for alleged thuggery and confiscation of party membership cards.

It was learnt that contrary to the instruction by Governor Adams Oshiomhole that the registration of party members be done in public places and not private homes, Sunday Vanguard was reliably informed that the ACN chieftain confiscated the cards meant for members of the party in Ward 3, Oredo Local Government Council in her home and was registering those loyal to her group.

Trouble started when the councilor representing the ward, Mr Valentine Asuen, insisted that the chieftain must produce the cards to enable members of the party register. The woman allegedly ordered her thugs to unleash mayhem on the councilor and his personal assistant who went with him.

Asuen, who briefed newsmen in Benin City , said, “Despite the warning by the governor, people are still hijacking the cards. When I went to her to bring out the cards, she even threatened that she will make sure that even as a councilor in that ward I will not be registered. Before I knew it, she ordered her thugs to beat us up. My personal assistant was seriously injured and I have made complaints to the police and the party leaders”.

As at the time of filing this report, the arrested AC chieftain was still cooling off her feet at the AIG zone 5, Benin.
