Nigeria Boxing Federation president, Rotimi George_Taylor was given a dress down by the Sports Minister Isa Ibrahim Bio after Nigerian boxers failed to win a single medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Bio disclosed yesterday during a press briefing that Taylor wanted to be endorsed for membership of the international boxing body; but he was confronted with the poor results Nigeria boxers posted at the Games.
“He came to my hotel room and told me about becoming a member of the international body. I was so upset, because I expected him to apologize for the poor showing Nigerian boxers posted at the Games.
“Boxing was one of our major sports, but can you imagine that they didn’t get even one bronze despite assistance that was given to them. It shows that Taylor is not fit to lead the federation,” said the Minister yesterday.
The boxing federation was enmeshed in controversy as the head coach Obisia Nwakpa and Mr. Taylor disagreed over technical matters. Obisia accused Taylor of highhandedness in taking decisions particularly the selection of boxers. Obisia was eventually dropped from the Commonwealth team.
