The sports editor, Vanguard Newspapers, Tony Ubani, yesterday emerged as the new Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Olympic Committee.
Ubani defeated incumbent candidate, Tony Nezianya 23-0 at the elections supervised by former president of the West African Football Union, Jonathan Ogufere. He was assisted by a former NOC member, Mrs Kofo Nwokedi and veteran sports caster, Fabio Olanipekun, who incidentally was a former PRO of the NOC.
Ubani’s ascendance in the sports political arena has not come as a surprise to many followers of Nigerian sports. A well groomed sports journalist of international repute, he was once the chairman of the powerful Lagos state chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria and deputy national chairman of the same body.
His election was greeted by a rapturous reaction from the many sports writers present at the venue. The new executive was sworn in soon after the elections.
