To reposition its operations for better service delivery, the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, Seme Border Command, has unfolded a three-fold mission of suppression of smuggling, collection of the maximum derivable revenue and accounting for same.

The Command generated N443 million as revenue in August.

Area Comptroller of the Command, Mr. Maitama Kura, told journalists in his office that the N443 million revenue came from duties, Value Added Tax, VAT, fines, levies and conventional  seizure of goods for the month and he attributed the decline to a drop in the importation of goods.

Other constraints confronting the Command, Mr. Kura said, included: “Absence of cargo holding area for examination and control of goods, the effects of economic down turn on importation and the swampy and aquatic nature of the terrain.”

Meanwhile, he said the Command had promoted 220 officers across board in line with the objectives of the new administration to motivate the staff and bringing out the best in them.
