One killed, 3 injured as building collapses

By Ola AJAYI, Ibadan
One person died and three others sustained serious injuries when a building under construction collapsed in Ibadan Friady.

The building which is being constructed in the premises of the Young Men’s Christian Association on Joyce B road was said to have collapsed around 9a.m when the labourers were working on it.

According to a witness who introduced himself as Adeoti, the men were packing mixed sand from one place to another while the other one was trying to remove the cast when the building suddenly gave way.

He said, “I was there when it happened. About three of us tried to remove the trapped men from the rubbles but when we discovered we could not, we cried out for help.

The man that died was at the centre when part of the structure collapsed and buried him.

“Another person sustained injury on the head while the other person was injured in his leg. He could not lift the leg from the rubble, we pulled him out.

“When we were trying to pack the rubbles, his  phone was ringing, but I don’t know if anybody picked it for him.

When Saturday Vanguard visited the scene of the incident, the co-workers who survived were sitting down but could not give any account as they looked too bitter.

The Oyo State Fire Service men led by Mr. Gbolagade Oladipupo quickly responded to the distress call. They were seen rushing out to take the injured ones to the hospital.

He said, “three people were involved. One dead, and two are seriously injured.  They have been taken to the orthopaedic hospital at Odunlakin area of  the city.

After the casualty had been taken away, some of the YMCA men were seen assessing the collapsed structure but did not speak to newsmen.

It was gathered that the labourers were trying to remove the wooden cast when a crack appeared on a part and before they could escape, the building had come down.
