No alternative to democracy – Prof Mimiko

The Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Prof. Femi Mimiko has said there is no better alternative to Democracy and that is what all Nigerians should be striving at.

Prof. Mimiko made this declaration while receiving the Governors’ forum team led by the Director, Mr. Asishan Bayo Okauru, at the University. The Vice-Chancellor opined that Nigeria would have been a better place, if we all confirm with the norms and values of real democracy.

He said: “we are about 140 million in Nigeria today, and I see know reason why we should not be able to solve our problems. If we all raise our heads and put up the right thinking cap, I am sure, Nigeria will become a place to be”

He described the Governors’ forum approach as one of the best that can assist our political leaders to know how far they have gone in fulfilling their electioneering promises.

He commended them for the peer reviewing mechanism which he said has since become “a key issue in determining the status of any university”.

Prof Mimiko further stressed that he is in line with what the governors are doing in terms of coming together, “it is good for our democracy, the more of things like this we have, the more forum that we create for our elected leaders and those who are technocrats who serviced them, the more opportunity for us to interact and to engage, the better for the democratic process.

For me, there is no alternative to democratic process and I think that is the way it should go “he added.

Also at the occasion, the Vice Chancellor revealed some of his achievements in recent time which include the reviewing and deepening the functionality of the school’s programmes, hosting of the VC policy round table on entrepreneurship, facilitated home and abroad training programmes for staff, beautification of the Institution’s landscape, launching of the school bus shuttle scheme, commissioning of the student relaxation center, introduction of the work study scheme, improved on the existing facilities and among others.

“Our desire is to make Adekunle Ajasin University a producer of globally competitive graduates, a 21st century properly called” he affirmed. Prof. Mimiko also mentioned some of his strategic plan to develop the University especially in the area of infrastructure in the next few weeks which will follow in quick succession.

“The university will be rolling out 10 different projects that will further change the landscape of the university such that by this time next year, the face of our campus would have changed.”

In his reaction, the director general of the governor’s forum, Mr. Asishana Bayo Okauru, described the forum as non partisan. He defined the group as a delegation from the Nigerian governor’s forum secretariat.

He added that they are on Peer reviewing of the state, that it was a decision taken by the 36 state governors to peer reviewing themselves.

He commended the management of the institution for its vision, mission and achievements within the last few months. He urged them to do more and strife to improve on the existing facilities. The governor’s forum team was in the state to develop a comprehensive frame work for the Peer Review of Ondo Sate, as well as showcase the achievements and future development plans of the state.

AAUA Student- Tosin Makinde Emerge Joint Winner 2009 Nigeria Young Journalist Award A 200 Level History and International Studies student of Adekunle Ajasin University and also a former intern at The Nation Newspapers, Tosin Makinde has emerged as a joint winner of the Year 2009 Nigeria Young Journalist Award.

The award ceremony was held in Lagos recently while Makinde was writing his fist semester examination in school. The duo of Makinde of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba – Akoko, Ondo State, and Adenike Ashogbon, of Mass Communication Department, Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, beat ten other entrants from other media houses.

Makinde and Ashogbon got a Laptop computer as prize for the award which was put together by Media Career Service, (MCS).sponsored by the Rivers State government.
