CALABAR—The Village Head of Okoroba in Ikot Ansa, Calabar, Cross River State, Esinjo Francis Edet, has called on Police authorities to investigate and apprehend the mother of a day old baby, who was dumped in a garbage bin and left to die.
The village head, who described the act as an abomination and a heinious crime, called on parents to monitor their wards and inculcate good morals in them to stop them from such terrible sins.
The baby was found dead early in the morning, lying in the garbage bin on Old Odukpani Road, Ikot Ansa, Calabar.
At the scene, people gathered to bemoan the fate of the baby as some women wept openly at the sight of the dead baby. They said there saw no reason whatsoever for a mother throwing away her own baby.
Expressing their grief, the women described the act as inhuman and a heinous crime against humanity and prayed God to punish the mother, who left the child to die in the garbage bin.
Commenting on the act, residents of the area suspected that the mother of the baby may have given birth to the child that morning as evident in the fresh blood and the umbilical cord, and surreptitiously dumped her in the garbage bin, living her to die.
They appealed to the police to investigate the matter and bring the culprit to book. The Director General, Cross River Sate Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Mr. Vincent Aquah, who visited the scene of the incident, said that it was an offence against God and humanity.
He called on security operatives to get to the root of the matter and prosecute whoever was responsible for the heinous crime.
