As 17 hospitalized after eating Amala

A breakfast of yam flour known as amala which is suspected to contain poisonous substance has resulted in hospitalization of 17 people in different parts of Ibadan.

Though, none of the six families that took the meal died at press time Tuesday, Vanguard learnt that some of them are still lying critically ill at Allahyyu  Hospital at Old Ife road area of the city.

According to Mr. Abdulhameed Sonibare, the father of three children who were among the victims of the meal, the children ate the meal on Sunday in their grandma’s residence.

Asked where the yam flour was bought, he explained that it was bought at Gbagi Market on Saturday evening.

Vanguard gathered that 13 of the victims who ate the food on Sunday morning were sick after the meal while another four persons that reportedly ate the food in another place were rushed to the hospital.

Confirming the incident, Dr. Junaid Ogundiran, a doctor in the hospital where some of the patients were taken to, said the nervous system of patients were affected and that they had diarrhoea and were vomiting seriously.

Though, he could not back up his claim with any scientific proof, he said problem could have been caused by the preservative used on the flour

Vanguard further learnt that some of them had been discharged, while six were still on admission.
