Jos—There was tension in the Plateau State House of Assembly on Tuesday as hundreds of youths stormed the premises ostensibly to frustrate an allged attempt to remove the Speaker, Mr Istifanus Mwansat.
The youths who converged on the House as early as 9.am were said to be acting on speculation of an alleged plot to remove the speaker to pave way for initiating impeachment moves against Governor Jonah Jang.
But reacting to the action of the youths, the speaker denied the alleged plan to remove him saying he could not be an obstacle to the impeachment of the governor if there were good grounds to do so.
Members of the house were last week invited for questioning by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, over a petition some alleged was masterminded by the executive.
It was learnt that some members had vowed to get back at the executive and are said to have been holding series of meetings to perfect their strategies.
It was unclear if initiating impeachment moves against the speaker or the governor were part of the plan, but the youths claimed to be acting on a tip off to that effect.
They refused to leave the house until afternoon, according to them, to prevent any such plan from being effected.
Members who were already at the house when the youths arrived exited quietly one after the other while others who heard of their presence as they headed for the house made a detour.
The speaker who told journalists that he did not know the mission of the youths said the house was made up of patriotic members who would always resolve differences maturely.
He confirmed ICPC’s invitation of all the 24 members over the allegation against them adding that some had already reported while others would report this week.
Vanguard had reported on Monday that all was not well between the executive and the legislature in the state a situation it said could result in a showdown.
