Police abort pro-Jonathan rally in Katsina

The police in Katsina, yesterday, aborted a rally in support of the ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan in next year’s elections, citing security reasons.

The rally was to double as the commissioning of Goodluck Jonathan 2011 campaign office in the city, home town of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.

The event which was billed for 10 a.m. was organised by Rebuild Nigeria Initiative.
Moments before the commencement of the programme, a detachment of policemen stormed the venue and sent the organisers, supporters and spectators packing.

Some of the supporters coming from outside Katsina in hired lorries and buses were turned back.
The co-ordinator of the group, Aminu Mamman Kuraban told reporters that the police gave no reason.
But the police commissioner, Mr. Sabo Ibrahim Ringim cited security reasons.
