National team coach-in-waiting, Samson Siasia has revealed his plans for the team, insisting that the Eagles would be built around the home-based players. His primary target is to raise the standard.
Siasia who discussed personal terms with the Nigeria Football Association also disclosed that he would toe the line of his former national team coach, Clemens Westerhof whose team was majorly built around the home-based players. To make this a reality, Siasia said he would be watching Nigerian Premier League and the national league matches where the best talents would be identified for the national team.
“I want to do what Westerhof did when we were playing. I will ensure I watch our league matches and go to the grassroots where talents are abound. We hope to make the best out of the situation,†Siasia said.
The Bayelsa-born gaffer is determined to lift the national team from its present all-time low position, 30th in FIFA ranking. But his engagement has been dragging on for too long as some analysts were already of the opinion that the national team stands to suffer when hostilities begin in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month.
The delay in engaging him has been attributed to the coach’s insistence that he be paid good enough for him to hire foreign coaches who will assist him. Siasia had always hired assistants whenever he has a national assignment.
A source disclosed to Sports Vanguard that there was mounting pressure on the Alhaji Maigari-led board to halt the employment of the Beijing Olympics silver-wining coach.
The reason being that the NFA board would expire in a matter of days, so why the rush? The new board should hire their coach. But Maigari and his executives are bent on going ahead as talks between them and the coach had reached advanced stage.
