Kwara milk in the pipeline

Kwara State government has launched a Dairy Development Programme (DDP) at Shonga Dairies to harness local sourcing of milk and make the product accessible to the people.

The programme is in collaboration with FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc, makers of Peak, Three Crowns and Friso brands of milk.

The state government had  in June signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Friesland Campina WAMCO and Shonga Dairies to commence the development programme.
Under the programme, the Shonga Dairies is expected to provide raw materials for the company to produce fresh milk.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony  in Shonga, Edu Local Government Area,  Governor Bukola Saraki disclosed that the DDP was aimed at promoting backward integration and value-chain development through the development of out growers system involving the local Fulani dairy farmers.

He stated  that the programme was designed to open up opportunities for local dairy and crop farmers to sell their products directly to the dairy  consortium thereby increasing their income and creating more wealth.

According to him, Shonga Dairies  has about 850 milking cows with a total capacity of 60,000 litres of fresh milk per day.
