Electricity subsidy: NGO calls for Sanusi’s removal

By Festus Ahon
UGHELLI—THE Initiative for Better Power Supply, IBPS, a non- governmental organisation, has called for the removal of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Lamido Sanusi over his comments on the electricity subsidy.

Reacting to Sanusi’s recent media report, that the removal of electricity subsidy was the only solution to the problem of epileptic power supply in the country, IBPS in a statement said the problem of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, did not lie in the subsidy. National Coordinator of the group, Mr Emmanuel Onose, said “Mallam Sanusi should not see the increase in tariff as a means to improve on the economy of the nation. The increase would only add to the suffering of the masses considering that electricity supply has not been improved upon.”

Lamenting the epileptic power supply in the country, the group argued that any increase in the electricity tariff would discourage investors  and urged President Goodluck Jonathan not to take Sanusi serious on the issue of increase in electricity tariff.

“Sanusi should be redeployed or retired otherwise the CBN may not do well,” the group said.
