CP, ASP to appear in court for disobedience

By Emma Arubi
WARRI — A Delta State High Court sitting in Otor-Udu, has ordered the state Commissioner of Police and one ASP Usman of the Nigeria Police Headquarters, Abuja, to appear before the court, tomorrow for allegedly consistently disobeying the ruling of the court, ordering the release of a suspect.

Trial judge in the matter, Justice Ebiowei Tobi, condemned the action of the police, saying the police behaved in the most “uncivilized manner by violating the order of a court,” adding that they have continued to take the laws into their hands.

According to the court, “a police force that has no regard for the order of a court is shameful. A police officer, no matter how highly placed, who thinks he is above the law is making a mistake because the hand of the law is big enough to handle anybody.”

The judge expressed regret that in spite of his order for the release the suspect on bail, one ASP Usman came to remove the applicant under the custody of the Commissioner of Police to Abuja.

He said that no court will allow its order to be violated and ordered both police officers to  appear before him,  to explain why they violated the order of the court, failing which he will issue a bench warrant for their arrest.
