WARRI—AN artisan resident in Aladja community, Delta State, Matthew Boyi, has been lynched by a group of youths in the area over an alleged criminal offence that was not reported to the Police.

Investigations by Vanguard showed that the deceased, who was hanged by his killers, was also seized by the youths and dragged to the Aladja community town hall.

National Coordinator of Forum for Justice and Human Rights Defence, FJHD, in the state, Mr. Oghenejabor Ikimi, who spoke to Vanguard on the matter said, “The youths who were seen by residents on the said fateful day were armed with woods and others dangerous weapons, dragging the victim to the Aladja community town hall where he was thoroughly beaten up by the youths, who inflicted several mortal injuries all over his body”.

He said that Matthew Boyi gave up the ghost after he had a short conversation with his elder sister, Madam Edirin Boyi, whom he had requested to buy him water to drink while in the custody of his said captors.

Ikimi said, “immediately the victim’s said elder sister left for the errand, the said victim gave up the ghost and his captors, sensing danger, hurriedly took the corpse behind the town hall where they cleverly hanged him in a bid to covering up their dastard act and to hoodwinking unsuspecting members of the public into believing that victim committed suicide by hanging himself all alone”.

Ikimi, added that rhe forum was not impressed with the attitude of the police in Ovwian to the matter, saying, “we condemn the action of the Divisional Police Station, Ovwian over their lackadaisical and lukewarm attitude towards the investigation of the matter so far, as the said police have refused to arrest the above culprits till date, hence the family of the deceased had briefed a lawyer to write a petition to the Inspector General of Police.”
