Agents attack Customs officer over issuance of Debit Note

A Customs Officer Mr Ephraim Inyang was  attacked by yet to identified group of Licensed Customs Agents for issuing a debit Note for a consignment that was under declared by its owner.

The Public Relation officer of  the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal Phase1 Mr Henry Babajide. said that the Command is suspecting one Mr Aloy Anokwuru for master minding the attack.

TheCommand spokesman also said that as soon as investigation into the matter is concluded, the culprits will be rounded up and handed over to the appropriate authority.

He stated that trouble started when the Officer in Charge of the Port Express Terminal Ephraim Inyang, a Chief Superintendent of Customs discovered some under declaration by the importer who said that he had 50 dozens of screw drivers.

On examination, it was discovered that there was a total of 5,000 screw drivers as against the 600 declared by the importer for which a paltry sum of N30,044 was paid as duty.

Inyang on the seeing the discrepancies issued a debit note of N678,639.92 VAT inclusive  .
On sensing that Inyang was not ready to bulge, the importer now called Mr Aloy Anokwuru who is the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal Chapter Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Customs Licensed Agents (ANLCA) to intervene in the matter.

Anokwuru however called Inyang to see what he could do to assist the importer, a request the Customs Officer said was beyond him adding that  there was nothing he could do in the present circumstances.

Inyang explained that It was at this point that the importer on sensing that he had no choice than to pay the Debit Note issued to him mobilised to launch an attack on the terminal which was targeted at the Officer in Charge.

As at the time of filling this report, Mr Ephraim Inyang was still recuperating from injuries sustained from the attack as he showed Vanguard his bruised body

When Vanguard cornered Anukwuru foe comments at his Kirikiri Office, he said that he was not involved in the attack adding that the boys that carried the attack on the terminal came from Tin-Can Island Port.

Effort to speak with the Customs Area Comptroller of the KLT Command was futile as he was said to be a way on official assignment outside Lagos.The goods in contention are still at the Port Express Bonded Terminal awaiting investigation into the matter.
